sustainability is at our core

Like everything we do at Borrowed Time, sustainable winemaking is an art form. Preserving our planet is a part of every aspect of production from farming to the winery to the bottling line. Our vineyards thrive when the ecosystems around them thrive. Each day we work to improve our efforts and create wines that will withstand the test of time and leave our planet replenished rather than depleted for years to come.

following the rules

Sustainability at the winery is more than just a mindset - it's a way of life. Decisions are made based on respect for the land, responsible energy use, and a desire to make the best and most environmentally-friendly wines possible.

To show our commitment, Borrowed Time Wines are certified sustainable through The Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing - a third party certification program dedicated to our region.

green initiatives make a difference

HABITAT RESTORATION
We are committed to a healthy environment by returning pieces of our family estate to their native state. Our family began habitat restoration in 1988 with the introduction of native plants for wildlife buffers. In 1995, the Gill Creek restoration project began and today the land along the creek features a natural landscape of cattails, cottonwoods and California roses.

RENEWABLE ENERGY
Taking advantage of the sunny northern edge of San Joaquin Valley, we have installed photovoltaic solar systems at our viticulture headquarters, several agricultural water pumps and our winery. The winery and vineyard programs have 1074 kW power capacity and their average production is 1.6 million kWh electricity per year - equivalent to the annual use of 200 homes in California.

SOIL, AIR AND WATER MANAGEMENT
In the vineyards we use California native grasses as cover crop, operate low emission tractors and use low volume drip irrigation along with sophisticated crop models to manage the use of water.

HABITAT CONSERVATION
We recognize that when the environment is healthy and stable, so are our vineyards. The presence of wildlife is encouraged in the vineyards by the introduction and preservation of native grasses and trees, and the placement of nesting boxes for owls, birds, and bats.
